GET A LIBRARY CARD!

  • WHERE TO APPLY

One System-One Card! Apply for your library card at the Viola Public Library or any other SWLS Member Library. The Southwest Wisconsin Library System (SWLS) member public libraries in Crawford, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, and Richland counties have agreed to use this system-wide card. If you already have a card with one of those libraries, you may use it here.

  • REPLACEMENT CARDS

There is a $3.00 fee for replacement of lost or stolen library cards. A limited amount of checkouts will be allowed before you must purchase a new card.

CHECKING OUT MATERIALS

Present your library card to check out library materials. You are responsible for any materials checked out on your library card.

RETURNING MATERIALS

  • WHERE DO I RETURN MY CHECKED OUT ITEMS?

o     Return materials inside the library during open hours.

o     CDs are fragile and MUST be returned INSIDE the library, not in the outside drops, to avoid damage.

o     Returning VHS or DVDs after hours? Please use the DVD drop. (If a VHS doesn’t fit there, tie it into a plastic shopping bag before depositing in the regular drop.)

o     You are responsible for damages if these precautions are not followed.

  • WHERE IS THE BOOK & DVD DROPS?

The book and DVD drops are located on the north side of the building, near the white service door.

  • HOW DO YOU KNOW MY BOOKS AREN’T OVERDUE WHEN I RETURN THEM IN THE BOOK DROP?

Materials returned in the book drop after we close on the day they were due will not be counted as overdue.

  • MAY I RETURN VIOLA PUBLIC LIBRARY ITEMS TO ANOTHER PUBLIC LIBRARY IN THE AREA?

o     We prefer that Viola Public Library materials be returned to us. However, materials may be returned to other libraries within the Southwest Wisconsin Library System and neighboring library systems.

o     Please be aware that you are still responsible for the items until they reach us and that you may receive overdue notices due to travel time of the items.

o     To avoid possible fines, please ask the returning library to indicate the day you returned our materials to them.

FINES, PRICES, & REPLACEMENT COSTS

  • HOW MUCH ARE OVERDUE FINES?

The Viola Public Library does not currently charge overdue fines. However, library borrowing privileges will be affected when items are not returned or are repeatedly returned late. If materials are borrowed from another system library, their fine policies may apply.

  • WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE A BOOK OR MY DOG HAS A SNACK?

You will be charged for any damage that occurs to any material while it is checked out to you. Lost or eaten items will be billed at the replacement cost of the item plus a reprocessing fee.

  • WHAT DO YOU CHARGE FOR PHOTOCOPIES AND PRINTOUTS FROM THE COMPUTERS?

o     Current prices for photocopies and computer printouts are posted.

o     You are responsible for payment of every page you print, including any ads pages or extra pages if you press print multiple times, even accidentally.

o     Use Print Preview before printing & be patient as print requests go through the internet to the printer.

o     Ask if you need help.

RENEWALS

  • HOW MANY TIMES CAN I RENEW LIBRARY MATERIAL?

o     Books may be renewed for one week twice, as long as no one else has requested it.

o     *NO renewals for new or high demand items, magazines or audio/visual items (VHS/DVDs/CDs).

o     *Please be considerate when checking out multiple disc DVDs. (Can you realistically binge watch an entire series for 14 hours/day during that entire week?)

o     If you come to the library to renew an item in person, you do not need to have the item with you, but you will need to present your library card.

  • MAY I RENEW BY TELEPHONE OR EMAIL?

o     You may renew an item as long as no one else has requested it. The item does not need to be present to renew it.

o     Provide your library card number at the time of renewal when you wish to renew an item by telephone or by email. Include your card number in the body or signature line of your email renewal request (not the subject line!).

o     Your library card number is the barcode number on your Southwest Wisconsin Library System library card. (It’s in the format of: 2989600xxxxxxx.)

o     You may renew items through the online catalog at our website up through the day before they are due. If you have questions about renewing online, please ask and we will walk you through the process. (Hint: Don’t use spaces when typing in your library card number.)

  • MAY I RENEW AN ITEM I RECEIVED THROUGH INTERLIBRARY LOAN?

Because most libraries already give extended loan periods for materials, renewal requests are not encouraged.

HOLDS, RESERVES, REQUESTS

  • WHAT IF WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IS NOT IN RIGHT NOW OR YOU DON’T OWN IT?

o     You may place materials on hold through our website or with library staff. When the item returns, you will be notified. You have (10) ten days to pick up the material.

o     Please notify us ASAP if you no longer want nor need an item that you have requested.

o     We can also borrow materials from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. Please remember that even though this is a free service to you, it costs the library money even when you don’t pick up your items. Please keep cancellations to a minimum.

WE PROVIDE SERVICES TO OUR COMMUNITY

  • HOMEBOUND DELIVERY

Home delivery of library materials twice a month is available to Viola village residents with medical conditions or physical disabilities that prevent them from leaving their home. Contact library for details.

  • INTERNET ACCESS & WI-FI

o     Internet access is provided free of charge. Printing charges apply. Check current costs at front desk.

o     Please read the computer/Internet policies before signing in at the front desk when using the computers and microfilm equipment.

o     Stop at the front desk for the current password for our wi-fi service. It is available 24/7 and is generally accessible in the garden and parking lot.

WRITTEN PARENTAL PERMISSION FOR CHILD INTERNET ACCESS

o     Children under 18 must have a signed parental permission slip on file in order to use the Internet.

o     Parent/guardian must come to the library to sign the permission form. Parental Internet Permission slips will not be sent home with the child.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

  • STORYTIME (Registration is required)

Tuesdays 1:15pm – 2:00pm Sept-Dec & Jan-May. Call by Thursday pm for Tuesday programs. Times and dates subject to change. Call for details. A three child minimum is necessary to run programs.

  • SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAMS (Registration is required)

This program is open to children, teens, young adults & adults July through August. Stay tuned in for crafts to participate in, games to play and fun for everyone! Contact the library for specifics.
